AltConf Streaming of WWDC Content Cancelled
05 JUNE 2015
SummaryDue to a letter from Apple's legal representatives, AltConf will not be able to show any content from WWDC in the Viewing Room. In its place, sessions will be shown from Google I/O, Microsoft’s Build, NSConference, 360|iDev, and UIKonf. All AltConf speaking sessions have remained untouched and will proceed as scheduled.
AltConf has received a letter from Apple’s legal representatives demanding that AltConf refrain from streaming or displaying any video content from WWDC. Unfortunately, this includes the Keynote and State of the Union stream on Monday, which has been a part of the AltConf program for the last few years. This also affects the Viewing Room, where video sessions from WWDC were going to be shown in the hopes to create a collective place where AltConf attendees could view and discuss WWDC content together.
All AltConf speaking sessions have remained untouched and will proceed as scheduled. Hero tickets are unaffected, as these only apply to seating in the two speaking theaters of AltConf.
According to the correspondence from Apple’s legal representatives, “Apple exercises control over not only the content of its messaging, but also the manner in which those messages are packaged, distributed and delivered.” AltConf’s streaming of Apple content “would strip Apple of exclusive control over one of the most anticipated events of the year, and could deprive Apple of potential revenue generated from its exclusive rights.” Thus, AltConf must “refrain from publicly streaming or showing any WWDC content. Apple further demands that AltConf and each of its organizers refrain from reproducing or distributing any WWDC content belonging to Apple, in any manner.”
AltConf organizers are doing everything in their power to come to an agreement, using multiple channels and direct contacts with Apple. The organizers still hold out hope that Apple will help to resolve this situation to benefit the whole community.
Following in the same fashion as the first Alt event in 2011, AltConf will be showing live blogs during the WWDC Keynote, followed by a special Keynote reaction panel from iMore. Attendees can join in at the Metreon in comfortable theater-style seating in a relaxed atmosphere. While you will not be able to watch the Keynote at AltConf, there are, thankfully, a number of community-driven events that are streaming the Keynote, including those run by Twitter, Thoughtbot, and InMobi.
Despite this setback, AltConf organizers are planning on keeping the Viewing Room alive and kicking. A number of generous community conferences have stepped in, and select videos will be shown from Google I/O, Microsoft’s Build, NSConference, 360|iDev, and UIKonf. If you’re a conference organizer and would like to contribute, please get in touch via firstname.lastname@example.org.
This is an unfortunate turn of events, but the excitement for the biggest AltConf still remains. With over 90 speakers, over a thousand attendees, and a rich, vibrant community of alternative events--including Layers, WWDCGirls, CocoaPods Alt State Of The Union, and many, many more--2015 is going to be a fantastic year to be in San Francisco for WWDC and AltConf.
